Spirit of Hope MCC
Business Name:
Spirit of Hope MCC
Business Genre:
Congregations
Long Business Description:

Spirit of Hope was the Church for everyone before it was convenient, providing a safe sacred place for lesbian and gay people when being out meant fear of arrest, loss of jobs, and publicly condoned discrimination. Kansas City is more tolerant because of our work that began in 1971. When Gay men began dying of AIDS and other churches refused to bury them, let alone touch them, Spirit of Hope buried them and cared for all their needs. The Samaritan Project was founded from our work. We believe when one person in the Church has HIV the whole Body of Christ has HIV.

We went public with our advocacy for LGBTQIA people and have been arrested and called many names, but today we embrace the labels with sacred defiance. Whatever you call us we are the Christian church for all people-we don't just welcome queer folk, we are trans, intersex, gender queer, asexual, lesbian, gay, bi, and we have HIV. We are Spirit of Hope and we embrace you without concern for your relationship, sexuality, or identity.
